by Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries - Community Outreach
Preparations have begun for in-person Día de Los Muertos celebrations at Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, and Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard. After a two-year absence, we are happy to bring back what has become an annual tradition for our patrons and the greater community.
Our first Día de Los Muertos Mass and celebration occurred at Calvary Cemetery and Mortuary in East Los Angeles in 2014. Joined by Santa Clara Cemetery and Mortuary in 2017, these unique cultural celebrations have grown both in understanding and popularity, thus allowing our patrons and their families to honor and share the stories of their loved ones in different ways.
This year we are excited to announce that San Fernando Mission Cemetery and Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary will join in the celebrations as they host a Día de Los Muertos Prayer Vigil on the evening of November 1, 2022, at 6:45 pm. This outdoor Vigil service will include blessing six altars built by local community organizations, along with music and the digital projection of religious images.
Calvary celebrations will begin with Mass at Noon on Saturday, October 29, 2022 followed by the community celebration. Santa Clara's Mass and celebrations will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Noon followed by a procession led by images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego. Both Saturday events will include cultral presentations, music, artists, childrens crafts, snacks and entertainment.
