This devotion originated in the late 12th and early 13th centuries when Christian hermits lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where they built and dedicated a chapel to the Blessed Virgin.
Inspired by the prophet Elijah, Pope Honorius III officially approved the Carmelite Order in 1226. Elijah, known for his fervent faith and significant role in the Old Testament, is an important figure in Carmelite tradition, symbolizing the Order's commitment to prayer, contemplation, and service.
The feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July 16th. It was chosen in the late 14th century to honor Mary for her protection and guidance of the Carmelite Order. Over the centuries, devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has spread worldwide, leading to many churches, cemeteries, and communities dedicated to her.
